Digital photography has come a long way since my very first Mustek about 6 years ago. Boy, that was one pretty poor quality camera. Unless you had a spotlight on your subject the photo was dark and grainy. Today, that is almost a thing of the past, at least in the same price range of about $150. But the best part of today's digital cameras is that you get two for the price of one. No, I'm not talking about two cameras, though in a way you could look at it that way. I'm talking about something entirely different.
I'm talking about video. Have you noticed that many of today's digital cameras now have the ability to take video as well as still photos? And let me tell you, the digital quality of the videos is not bad at all. Yes, some are better than others and the sound quality is nowhere near as good as it would be with an external mic, but for non professional videos (or just to have some fun with) the quality is certainly good enough.
As a matter of fact, I just recently got myself an HP Photosmart that is quite a neat little camera and easy as all heck to use. It has three mode settings, video, camera and capture. It's easy to set with the flick of a switch in the back of the camera. The menu driven system is very intuitive and very easy to follow. Even the manual is easy to read...something that is very rare today. And the camera wasn't expensive at all.
The point is, digital photography has come a long way and so has the equipment. Therefore, if you've been intimidated by the thought of taking photographs with one of these babies, don't be. Even my wife, who is no professional photographer by any stretch of the imagination, has no problem using one of these babies. She's even taken some nice photos of me and my daughter. And let me tell you, getting your kid to take a photo with you is not easy. And videos...forget it. But today's technology makes it a lot easier.
