Listen closely. Last time we ran through a few digital photography tips about how to raise and train your camera. But there were a couple of minor details we left out. So this time around we're going to take this article - and show you exactly how to make use of your digital camera's best friend - the guide book (or camera manual).

So what's the guide book then? Isn't that obvious? :) That's the little booklet that arrives hugging your digital camera tightly, as if there were no tomorrow. It's usually written in a whole bunch of languages. Dig through it and you'll find diagrams and pictures about stuff that's apparently on your digital camera. Try your best to understand it, and then cast it aside and come back later.

So anyway, what's the lesson, or the photography tip to be had here? Well you see, your camera is just waiting to learn new tricks. She wants to know about life, and cool things. She wants to be on the beach taking the sandy snaps with waves dancing at her feet. She wants to feel the brisk chill as she snaps the intimacies of your New Zealand mountain trekking. Get my drift? But she doesn't know the finer details. And that's where you come in to the picture...

Your mission, if you accept it, is to teach her these things. You've got to dig into her best friend (the camera manual) and ask questions. Now sometimes that's gonna be embarrassing. And sometimes you'll feel incredibly silly trying out all those camera buttons. But believe me. She'll love you for it. And you'll both be learning new things. And one day it'll all fit together, as if by magic.

And when that day comes, you'll sigh and say "I knew it'd be easy!" So, the bottom line to all this is that when people say that you can't teach an old camera new tricks, I want you to nod your head in agreement and say "I know. It's true. But you can teach a NEW camera OLD tricks!"

And then slip out the back door as fast as you came in. :)
